The brass sextants available at Handcrafted Model Ships are authentic replicas that are handcrafted from brass and fitted with unique serial numbers. The back of the brass sextant features an engraving of “Hampton Nautical” to further authenticate itself. The quality of our brass sextants are taken very seriously, as can be witnessed by the equipping of a hardwood case for the more expensive replicas. While these items are of high quality, you can buy them below the standard retail prices at Handcrafted Model Ships.

History

The first sextant was created in 1759 by John Bird. But before that, there were many different innovations that allowed navigators to find their relation to Polaris. The earliest way to measure the latitude while sailing was by using one’s thumb and one or two finger lengths on an outstretched arm. Also, navigators would employ the use of an arrow at arm’s length. One of the earliest inventions was the Arabic Kamal. The Greeks and the Arabs were responsible for many of the astrological and astronomical advancements in science. It wasn’t until the 10th century that Europe would be introduced to the breakthroughs the Arab’s created with the astrolabe and the quadrant. After World War II, a firm in Germany called C. Plath manufactured the design for the most modern advancements in sextants.

The evolution of the sextant and other navigational tools is an important part in the science of astrology and astronomy. The breakthroughs that would come with innovations in technology led to a world that became increasingly connected and proficient. Nowadays, global positioning systems are making sextants obsolete. But for some navigators, relinquishing their sextants is out of the question.
